Founded in 1987 by a consortium of South African private investors led by Richard Hein, Oceanco initially began constructing yacht hulls and superstructures in Durban, South Africa, before transporting them to the Netherlands for final fit-out. The shipyard rapidly gained an international reputation for its quality craftsmanship and pioneering ambition, which led to its acquisition by Greek shipping magnate Theodore Angelopoulos in 2002. Undergoing a significant transformation, the acquisition saw Ocenco shift its focus to building custom megayachts 80 metres and up, known as the ‘Y Generation.’ In 2010, Oceanco changed ownership once more and was acquired by current owner Mohammed Al Barwani, an Omani businessman, who moved its flagship facility to Alblasserdam to enable the construction of yachts up to 140 metres in length, continuing to drive the shipyard’s growth and innovation. Today, Oceanco’s DNA is defined by uncompromising quality, bespoke client-driven design, and a spirit of innovation. The shipyard has a strong focus on sustainable technologies, such as hybrid propulsion, extensive use of glass for natural light, energy-efficient systems, and eco-conscious materials, as well as advanced engineering systems. Oceanco’s slogan, “What if ‘different’ is in our DNA?”, reflects a readiness to challenge norms and deliver visionary yachts that exceed expectations. The yard’s global fleet includes some of the world’s most impressive and award‑winning vessels. Notable examples of Oceanco superyachts include the 90m Luna (ex DAR), winner of the 2019 World Superyacht Award; the 106.7m Black Pearl, a trailblazing sailing yacht with DynaRig and hybrid propulsion; and the 117m Infinity, the largest yacht ever built in the Netherlands at the time with seven decks and extensive wellness facilities.
