About the Journey

On November 15, 2024, the Sunreef 60 Power Eco “Double Happiness” embarked on a historic adventure from Gibraltar to Antigua, becoming the first Power Eco catamaran to conquer the Atlantic.

The crossing wasn’t without its challenges. After departing Gibraltar, the crew enjoyed calm seas en route to Tenerife, but the second leg presented a different story. As they sailed into the Tradewinds, following swells kept the team on their toes, testing both the vessel’s capabilities and the crew’s resilience.

Arriving in Antigua on December 6, 2024, “Double Happiness” not only set a new standard for eco-conscious yachting but also demonstrated the reliability and performance of its innovative systems.

Route Overview

  • Departure: Gibraltar, 15 November

  • Stopover: Tenerife, 19 November

  • Arrival: Antigua, 6 December

The journey was meticulously planned to optimize fuel efficiency and leverage favorable weather conditions. After departing Gibraltar, the crew made a scheduled stop in Tenerife to refuel and conduct system checks.

The second part of the journey brought following swells and steady winds, testing both the vessel and the crew’s adaptability to the dynamic ocean environment.

Maintaining an average speed of 7 knots, the yacht’s advanced hybrid propulsion and solar technology proved vital for the long haul. Completing the journey with 689 liters of fuel remaining, “Double Happiness” demonstrated not only efficiency but also the reliability of cutting-edge eco-innovations.

Captain Josh’s Perspective

Honestly, I was never really concerned about the crossing as this was my third time doing it and my second Sunreef ECO, so I am quite familiar with the system. My only concern was leaving in the best weather window possible, and we had all necessary spares onboard for any problems we may encounter.  All in all, it was one of my more pleasurable crossings, the fact that aircon could be on most of the journey and the Starlink made the trip a lot more bearable for the crew and secure knowing we could always be connected to friends, family and most importantly emergency services if need be.
